Hometown Harvest is a university and community collaboration that inspires K-12 students to grow, prepare, and enjoy fruits and vegetables, especially heirloom varieties. The garden is located at the Historic Vickery House, headquarters of the College of Education’s Appalachian Studies Center. In this outdoor teaching space, children and college students work beside community elders.
Hometown Harvest is special in that it brings together people of all ages within the community, from children to community elders and in between. It is also special in that all activities occur at the historic Vickery House and provide community members an opportunity to visit the house and have a strong presence on campus. With your support, we will be able to continue to sustain the Vickery House gardens. As most gardeners know, this is an ongoing project, with many items needing to be replaced each year, and we enjoy the time spent with children, youth, and community members. The results are beautiful gardens containing food in which community members can actually partake.
Thank you for helping us to expand our community garden-based learning project!
