The TRUIST Center for Ethical Leadership is dedicated to cultivating ethical leaders and fostering ethical thought. Founded in 2012 by the Mike Cottrell College of Business and BB&T Corporation (now TRUIST), the center aims to deepen understanding of ethical leadership among today's and tomorrow's leaders. Through education, research, and professional development programs, it promotes critical thinking and ethical decision-making at community, university, and K-12 levels.
At the heart of our university efforts are our students. We bring ethics education into our classrooms at UNG in many ways, one being the UNG Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Team, where students compete against top universities from around the region and nationally, impacting regional and national ethical considerations on topics like the use of artificial intelligence, ethical issues within our healthcare system and many more.
Teams compete in a debate-style competition around 15 regional cases published annually in September. There are four main rounds, a semi-final round, and a final round within the competition to determine the top teams that will advance to the national competition organized in partnership with the Association of Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE). The regional competitions are held annually in the fall semester where universities build teams of 3-6 students to compete to earn a seat to the National Ethics Bowl competition in the spring semester. This next year, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl competition will bring together up to twenty universities and will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2024 on the UNG Gainesville Campus and the National Ethics Bowl competition will take place Feb. 20-23, 2025 in Norfolk, Virginia.
This experience not only instills ethical thinking in our students but fosters a positive way to have critical and difficult conversations around complex and controversial topics that face our nation. We need more opportunities for students to experience civil disagreement that ultimately strives for a solution to the issue at hand. Our center is dedicated to developing ethical leaders and fostering ethical thought across communities. With your support, we can continue our mission of promoting critical thinking and ethical decision-making through the Ethics Bowl competition.
Join us in shaping a future of ethical leadership by supporting the UNG hosted competition and the UNG Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Team.
